So with a little bit of glee, and just a touch of madness, you've decided to study foundation phase teaching. May I be the first one to say congrats! And my deepest condolences. And for in case you don't know, that is a reference from Jupiter Ascending, as I am a major movie geek. So as I was typing up my previous article: Pick A Boo! Is Foundation Phase Teaching The Career For You? I also went around asking for student's top tips to help you survive this course. These are the things not often mentioned much as they should when studying this degree/diploma.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 1: Finding good hardworking partners is essential for the group projects Your group partners do not necessarily have to be your friends. As long as they have that highly qualified reputation of doing quality work, then you are hopping on that good-ole-train for success. However, that doesn't give you a reason to slack.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 2: Supposedly “Easy” questions can be more complicated than what meets the eye To put it plainly, lecturers often require you to think out of the box, and more practically. Teaching certainly doesn't have a precise instruction manual, therefore having the ability to apply the aspects and tweaking them according to your current circumstances, will help you along the way.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 3: Stay Motivated Beyond the next caffeine boost, you'll have to find other ways to get that next assignment done. Some of the requirements can seem monotonous, mundane and at times pointless. Remind yourself why you started this in the first place, and keep your eyes on your future goals. That'll take you far.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 4: Build Connections With People For The Future During this time of life, you will be meeting people with a variety of different career paths, not just teaching. Building relationships and friendships with these people may benefit you in the long term. As finding jobs or gaining success is often because of you knowing people.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 5: Remember To Rest Albeit that there are many people who sleep and take it easy way too much, some of you out there are straight-out workaholics, and once you find yourself flooded with work, it's easy to forget that rest and sleep is actually necessary to survive. If you don't rest enough, you will burnout, and if you burnout, you fail. Simple as that.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 6: Ask When You Need Help Some things you just grasp with a flick of your finger, and yet there is always going to be a subject, question or assignment who's concept and understanding which will be elusive. Don't be afraid to ask and use the facilities provided in order to find the answers you need. Furthermore, ask a friend in your classroom, as people's brains are wired differently. Therefore, some find some concepts easier than others. That is nothing to be ashamed of.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 7: Recycling Will Be Your New Best Friend In this career path, I've been told and recommended that you start collecting recyclable material as soon as possible. From old newspapers, toilet rolls, bottle tops, and containers, you will inevitably need this for projects in the near future. Trust me, this tip will save your life.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 8: Planning And Reading Ahead I know you have probably heard this before, but reading the materials to be covered before class really does work, even in this career path. Furthermore, if you are going to skip classes (which essentially, you will from time to time) it certainly helps for you not to lag behind. Because face it, no one likes catching up with anything. Unless it is the next episode in the Netflix series, then by all means.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 9: If Possible, Find A Job On The Side So not only will this create a small extra income in order to help cover debt or that next Burger King Bill, but it will also look good on your CV. So if possible, find a part-time job related to the teaching industry, for example, swim coaching. Not only will this rack up hours and experience for yourself, but it will also assist in your learning as you take on more responsibilities. This will certainly help you in finding a full-time job in the future.
Foundation Phase Teaching Tip 10: Finish Your Assignments Earlier Procrastinating will not help you get this degree, and it will certainly not alleviate your stress and problems in life. Finishing your assignments earlier, and backing them up (very important!), will remove a lot of your worries, and allow you to tweak anything that might be wrong before you submit your assignment. Trust me, it will have a significant improvement for your mind and your marks. So there you have it! Top Ten Tips for for surviving foundation phase teaching! Hope you found them all helpful. If you have any more tips please let me know! I would also love to get your feedback. Until next time
